Spatial Flux Exhibition at the Gregory Allicar Museum of Art at Colorado State University features selections from the Joann Gonzalez Hickey collection as curated and conceived by CSU graduate MFA students. May 29 – September 22, 2018 Spatial Flux
University of Colorado MFA students brought the Denver Art Museum Word Dance exhibition to life on April 28, 2017. The students viewed the text based drawing from the exhibition and used the drawings as a touchstone for poetry. The students then had a public reading of their poetry performed within the Drawing Gallery at the Hamilton Building as part of the museum’s series: Untitled “Talk Back”. Readers and participants are all students in CU Boulder’s Creative Writing MFA program and members of Julie Carr’s Graduate Poetry Workshop.
Word Dance
The collection was the foundation for a Fall 2014 Advanced drawing course at PAFA. The course incorporated studio work, reading, writing, and museum practices in an integrated curriculum. Through drawing, critiques, discussions, direct experience with working artists and a wide range of works on paper, the students used the basic question – “What is Drawing?” to guide their engagement with the practice. There was a Works-in-Progress exhibition of related studio work at the end of the semester. Students also collaboratively organized an exhibition from the JoAnn Gonzalez Hickey Works on Paper Collection in PAFA’s Richard C. Von Hess Works on Paper Galleries.
The collection was utilized again in 2015 by advanced Drawing course at PAFA culminating in the 2016 exhibition – Dot, Dash, Dissolve: Drawn from the JoAnn Gonzalez Hickey Collection at Samuel M.V. Hamilton Building.

In 2012 more than 20 students from MICA’s Curatorial Practice MFA and Critical Studies Program utilized the Collection for a workshop over the course of the semester both online and on location in New York.
