The collection was the foundation for a Fall 2014 Advanced drawing course at PAFA. The course incorporated studio work, reading, writing, and museum practices in an integrated curriculum. Through drawing, critiques, discussions, direct experience with working artists and a wide range of works on paper, the students used the basic question – “What is Drawing?” to guide their engagement with the practice. There was a Works-in-Progress exhibition of related studio work at the end of the semester. Students also collaboratively organized an exhibition from the JoAnn Gonzalez Hickey Works on Paper Collection in PAFA’s Richard C. Von Hess Works on Paper Galleries.

In 2012 more than 20 students from MICA's Curatorial Practice MFA and Critical Studies Program utilized the Collection for a workshop over the course of the semester both online and on location in New York.
